How Does Mist Humidification Work?

Our specialized, high-pressure pump and nozzles produce micro-sized droplets that are suspended in the air, and as they evaporate, they absorb heat and increase the relative humidity in a facility. This rapid evaporation provides increased moisture without getting things wet.

Our humidification pump has a built in controller that senses the relative humidty of the space. It compares that reading to your target setting, and automatically turns the system on and off to maintain the relative humidity within your target range.

There are many specific needs that humidification may address, such as human health, plant growth, disease mitigation, prevention of static electricity buildup, curing of certain chemicals, excessive drying from A/C systems, etc. Our automated humidification system can help solve all these needs.

Humidification System Design

Before we get into the specifics of humidification, a few things are important to consider for all system types:

  • Water Source Requirements: Most of our misting pumps require a water pressure of 40PSI-60PSI coming into the pump while it is running. Having too little pressure and flow could shorten the pump's life span, lead to unwanted vibrations, or even prohibit operation.
  • Power Source Requirements:  We have pumps available for 110VAC, 220VAC, and 460VAC power types. Knowing what type of power you have available will be important when choosing the right pump(s).
  • Determining Pump Location: The best location for the pump is where it can sit level and have power and water sources nearby. It should also be in the space being humidified so that the sensor on the pump can take an accurate reading. Our pumps come standard with a rust-proof, weather-rated enclosure, so it is okay for the pump to be in the elements, as long as it will not be flooded or submerged.
  • Water Quality and Filtration: All high pressure systems come standard with a 5-micron sediment filter with a replaceable element. Adding an anti-scale filter is highly recommend for humidification systems, unless extremely high-quality filtration (such as RO) is already present at the facility. For larger systems, or locations where water quality is poor, our Industrial sediment and scale filter may be required.
  • System Control Options: The humidification pump comes with an on/off toggle switch and a built in humidistat with sensor wire. Some facilities may already have an automated control system with a humidistat function available. If so, our humidity controller can be deleted so that your own automation system can supply or deny power to our pump.
  • Tubing Type and Color: Stainless steel, black, or dark brown tubing are recommended for humidification systems, especially in greenhouses where sunlight may cause algae growth in lighter-colored tubing. For larger facilities that will require mist lines that are hundreds of feet long, 3/8" tubing with compression fittings are often preferred over the 1/4" tubing and push-lock fittings used in most cooling applications.

Specific to humidification:

  • There are a few important pieces of information that our team of experts will need to know when working with you or providing design advice:
  • What is the target relative humidity that you would like to maintain in your facility?
  • What is the temperature outside the facility?
  • What is the relative humidity outside the facility?
  • What will the set temperature be inside the facility?
  • What is the cubic volume of space inside the facility? (or WxLxH)
  • In any given hour, what approximate percentage of the air in the facility is contained or recycled, versus the approximate percentage of air that is refreshed from the outside.
  • Is the recycled air subject to air conditioning or any other processes that remove humidty from the air?
  • Are there any other systems in the greenhouse that already add humidity, such as wet walls or sprinkler systems?
  • The above questions are highly important for sizing the system properly! For example, a greenhouse in a desert climate that uses large cooling fans to constantly bring in fresh air will likely need a lot more mist than a greenhouse in a humid environment where very little ventilation is present.
  • With the proper information, we can calculate a rough estimate of how much water you need to evaporate per hour to maintain your target humidity. Of course, we don't want the system to run all the time, so we normally target a 1/3 hour run-time average. For example, if you need to evaporate 18 gallons per hour (0.3 Gallons per minute), we would design a system capable of evaporating 54 gallons per hour (0.9 Gallons per minute). This would ensure the system can cycle on and off at reasonable intervals (for example, 3 min on, 6 min off), and that it could still keep up if demand for moisture increased unexpectedly.
  • Most designs end up following a similar pattern: Misting lines usually run parallel, spaced 10-20 feet apart, with misting nozzles spaced every 6-10 feet on the line, all depending on the facility's specific needs. You can get a rough idea of what to expect regarding system size from that average.
  • Many humidification customers prefer .002" or .004" nozzles, which are smaller than our .006" nozzles that as come standard with most systems. The lower flow rate of the smaller nozzles helps further mitigate the risk of wetness in humid environments, but must also be kept in mind when sizing the system and pump. Make sure to discuss this with our misting experts when we're helping design your system.
